Un joven se encuentra buscando el lugar perfecto para enterrar a su fiel compañero, un perro maltés llamado Cihuato. Entre el duelo y los recuerdos, la búsqueda lo lleva a descansar bajo la sombra de un árbol, donde comienza un ritual de despedida cargado de nostalgia y frituras.
Sin embargo, el funeral toma un giro inesperado cuando, al cavar la fosa, descubre un “tesoro” enterrado: una antigua botella de tequila. Al probar el fuerte elixir, la realidad comienza a desdibujarse entre los efectos del alcohol y lo sobrenatural, es acechado por sombras y risas.
A young man is searching for the perfect place to bury his faithful companion, a Maltese dog named Cihuato. Between grief and memories, his search leads him to rest under the shade of a tree, where he begins a farewell ritual filled with nostalgia and fried snacks.
However, the funeral takes an unexpected turn when, while digging the grave, he discovers a buried “treasure”: an old bottle of tequila. Upon tasting the potent elixir, reality begins to blur amidst the effects of alcohol and the supernatural; he is haunted by shadows and laughter.
Filmar ‘Cihuato’ fue uno de los ejercicios de resistencia y estrategia más intensos. Teníamos exactamente 48 horas para dar vida a está historia. No había margen de error; la planeación meticulosa que me caracteriza tuvo que condensarse en minutos.
‘Cihuato’ explora temas profundamente arraigados en nuestra identidad jalisciense: la tierra, el misticismo del agave y el tequila. Para aquellos que han perdido una mascota tan querida, vuelve un ritual su entierro. Está película combina este suceso con el descubrimiento de una bebida que recurrida para olvidar las penas.

Filming ‘Cihuato’ was one of the most intense exercises in endurance and strategy. We had exactly 48 hours to bring this story to life. There was no margin for error; the meticulous planning that defines me had to be condensed into minutes.
‘Cihuato’ explores themes deeply rooted in our Jalisco identity: the land, and the mysticism of agave and tequila. For those who have lost a beloved pet, its burial becomes a ritual. This film combines that event with the discovery of a drink used to drown one’s sorrows.
